The Kandy–Ella railway is a slow moving viewpoint, threading through villages and green slopes. Spend at least two or three nights in the highlands so the train is not your only encounter with the landscape.
Discover a cultural landscape far beyond a beach holiday
Sri Lanka’s Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian traditions meet across temples, festivals, architecture and daily life. Anuradhapura is not simply an archaeological site; it remains a place of pilgrimage. Kandy’s sacred spaces exist beside a living contemporary city.
Travel becomes richer when sacred sites are approached with patience. Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes where required and ask before photographing people.
Make every meal part of the journey
Sri Lankan food rewards curiosity: hoppers at breakfast, rice and curry with several vegetable dishes, kottu, fiery sambols, seafood and Tamil specialities.

Austria’s Foreign Ministry currently lists security level 2 for Sri Lanka, recommends checking developments regularly, and states that Austrian travellers need a passport valid for at least six months on entry. It recommends obtaining the appropriate ETA before arrival.
Sri Lanka’s immigration authority currently lists Austria among nationalities eligible for a free 30-day tourist ETA from 25 May 2026, but travellers still need to obtain the ETA before arrival. Rules can change, so verify both official sources immediately before booking and again before departure.
